IF WE RAN THE TONYS PART 2 - OUR PICKS TO WIN!

BY MATEO MORENO

BY RICKY JONES

The 2015 Tony Awards are here! Well, they're ALMOST here. They'll be presented THIS Sunday Evening, June 7th at Radio City Music Hall. In Part 1 of "IF We Ran The Tonys," Ricky and I discussed last month if we ran the Tony voting committee who we would nominate (If you missed that article, you can find it HERE). Below are the office nominees and a few words by Ricky and myself.

MATEO'S QUICK TAKE: There's been A LOT of fantastic plays on this season and two TRUE standouts with Curious & Hand To God. Without taking anything away from Curious or Alex Sharp's performance, HAND TO GOD & Stephen Boyer's performance in it is unlike anything I've seen in quite a while, and unlike anything Broadway has seen in YEARS. True originality. I hope Broadway honors the chances they took. Musical wise, Fun Home moved me more than any show has for a while. Though I do wish more love went to The Last Ship, everything about Fun Home is remarkable, and it's the only vote that I'm totally split on 50/50. Judy Kuhn and Sydney Lucas. Emily Skeggs is wonderful as well, but Kuhn and Lucas shine the brightest.

RICKY'S QUICK TAKE: In regards to plays, while I throughly enjoyed all of these nominees and applauded the bravery of bringing these plays to a broadway stage, The Curious Incident was something truly special.  It is one of those rare productions where all the elements come together in an emotional and completely original way. With musicals, it looks like a tight race between An American in Paris & Fun Home. Something Rotten however is the best example of great musical comedy since The Book of Mormon. Still, for my vote, The Last Ship all the way!
