THE 31st ANNUAL SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL AQUISITIONS

With the TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL nipping on its heels, THE 31st ANNUAL SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL ended last week and here are the titles that have been bought for distribution:

ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL -  Sweeping both the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize, this buzzy film stars The Walking Dead's Jon Bernthal and Park and Rec's Nick Offerman and tells teh teal of  a girl with cancer who develops a friendship with a boy who remakes movies with his friend. The movie sold to Fox Searchlight for somewhere around $6 million after an all out bidding war for the film began.

BROOKLYN - Nick Hornby adapted this Colm Tóibín novel and it stars Saoirse Ronan (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Hanna). Fox Searchlight snatched it up for a reported $9 million. "In 1950s Ireland and New York, young Ellis Lacey has to choose between two men and two countries."

DOPE - This coming of age comedy/drama for the post hip hop generation was the subject of a biddle war that involved The Weinstein Company, A24, & Fox Searchlight, but in the end was acquired by Open Road Films and Sony Pictures for around $7 million. It will open in the U.S. on June 12th.

THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL - Aquired by Sony Picctures Classics. Starring Kristen Wiig, Alexander Skarsgård, Christopher Meloni, and Bel Powley. Directed & written by Marielle Heller based on the novel by Phoebe Gloekner. "A teen artist living in 1970s San Francisco enters into an affair with her mother's boyfriend."

GRANDMA - Written and Directed by Paul Weitz (About a Boy) and starring Lily Tomlin, Julia Garner, Marcia Gay Harden, Judy Greer, Laverne Cox, and Sam Elliott. "Self-described misanthrope Elle Reid has her protective bubble burst when her 18-year-old granddaughter, Sage, shows up needing help. The two of them go on a day-long journey that causes Elle to come to terms with her past and Sage to confront her future." It was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics.

TANGERINE - Starring Mya Taylor, Kitana Kiki Rodriguez. Directed by Sean Baker. Written by Sean Baker & Chris Bergoch. "A working girl tears through Tinseltown on Christmas Eve searching for the pimp who broke her heart." Acquired by Magnolia Pictures
